Chapter Nineteen

Jess and her partners in crime were gone for about ten minutes before they returned. Fran, Reggie and Maryanne were all wispy and transparent, but my bestie looked the same as always.

“Was Quin home?” I asked, already knowing the answer by how faded the terrible trio were. From their self-satisfied grins, their mission to scare the con artist had been successful.

“She sure was,” Jess replied with a nasty chuckle.

“We put the fear of God into that woman,” Maryanne said in satisfaction.

“We covered her in so much ectoplasm that she looked like a gigantic gray blob,” Reginald added.

“Jess wrote a message on the wall in ectoplasm telling Quin to get out of town and to stop conning people, or she’ll end up in hell,” Fran finished up. We all burst out laughing and Geddon started awake. He’d tired himself out chasing the ball and had fallen asleep. Realizing I wasn’t in danger, he climbed onto his bed and settled back down to resume his nap.

“Good job, girls,” I said, wiping away tears of mirth. “And Reggie,” I added when he opened his mouth to complain.

“It was fun,” Jess said with a shrug.

“Especially the part where Quin ran for her car screaming at the top of her lungs,” Maryanne added with a chuckle.

“She left a trail of ectoplasm behind her like a gigantic slug,” Fran said.

“The house is going to need to be cleaned and painted and the carpet will need to be replaced,” Jess added and we started giggling again. At times like this, I was glad I was different from everyone else and that I had specters for friends.

My next client arrived and the spirits huddled together to chat about their prank. They were rightly proud of themselves for chasing the con artist away. Phantoms didn’t often get to interact with the living to this extent. They would be the envy of the dead community now.

Nina Rivers popped in for a quick visit during my afternoon break. Her cheeks were flushed when she burst inside. No one knew about Quin’s sudden decision to leave town yet, so the baker had to be here for another reason. “I heard you were seen with the Sheriff at the Mayhews’ house earlier today,” she said breathlessly. “Did you pick up anything about the kidnappers?”

“I was able to give Wyatt an address where I think Angelica and her Mom were taken,” I confirmed.

Her bowl cut hairdo became disheveled and smeared with flour when she ran a hand through it. “Pam told one of my customers that Angelica didn’t turn up for work this morning,” she told me. “Nancy Mayhew was supposed to meet a friend at the Town Hall, but she never showed up. Whoever has taken them means them harm.”

“Are you sensing that they’re in danger?” I asked in alarm.

She shivered, then nodded. “I have a hunch they’re all in trouble, but Angelica seems to be in the greatest peril.”

“This is bad, chicky,” Maryanne said. “Angelica is young and beautiful. I’m sure you can imagine the sorts of things the kidnappers will do to her.
